Current Transformer Monitoring Systems

Current Transformers (CTs) measure electrical current flowing through a conductor, stepping it down to a safe level for metering or protection equipment. Voltage Transformers (VTs), also called Potential Transformers, measure line voltage and scale it down proportionally. Both are critical assets in power distribution, and thermal imaging systems can monitor the surface temperature of both types to detect insulation degradation or overloading.

A Current Transformer (CT) works on electromagnetic induction: a primary conductor carries the load current, inducing a proportional secondary current in a wound coil around a magnetic core. This scaled-down secondary current is then measured safely. Thermal imaging complements CT sensors by monitoring radiated heat from the transformer body — a key indicator of internal stress, overloading, or insulation failure.

For most transformer and electrical cabinet monitoring applications, a 320×240 pixel resolution (such as the FLIR A40 or Seek G300) delivers sufficient thermal detail for hot spot detection. For large switchyards or high-value assets requiring precise temperature differentiation, higher resolutions of 464×348 or 640×480 pixels — available in the FLIR A50/A70 or A500/A700 — are recommended.
